Learn to Love Your Losers

by

Leroy Rushing

Ok, so no trader truly enjoys taking a losing trade. But if you want to succeed in this business of day trading, learning to love your losers (or at least accepting them) is one of the most important lessons you can learn. Psychologically, human beings are not well designed for trading financial markets. We hate losing, we hate being wrong, and we get buffeted about by those twin emotions – fear and greed. This leads us into all sorts of self destructive habits. Moving stop losses further out – just to give the trade time to turn round. Or grabbing a profit as soon as it appears – just in case we have to give it back.

The simple fact is that most successful traders lose as many, more likely more, trades as they win. What separates them from the rest is their ability to cut a losing position and run a winner for as long as possible. The arithmetic is simple. If your average winner is twice the size of your average loser, then you can be wrong on 50% of your trades and still make very good money.

In fact, you can be wrong 66% of the time and still break even. Improve the ratio by more than two to one and you can make massive amounts of money in the markets. Unless you can learn the art of letting winners run and cutting your losers short, you will never get those big winners that make the difference, and you will never reach that magical relationship where your average win is at least twice as big as your average loss. This fundamental concept holds true no matter what time frame you trade and whether you’re a day trader, swing trader, or even if hold your trades for over a year.

The key to reaching this state of affairs is to develop or adopt a high probability trading system and stick to it. The more you can automate the trading process, the less likely you will fall into bad habits. This will take the psychological problems away and allow you to be less controlled by your emotions.

So don’t be afraid of losing trades. They are part and parcel of this business. Learn techniques that will allow you to minimize and control them and the profitability of your trading will improve more than you can imagine. Fail to master this concept and you set yourself up for disappointment and frustration.

Of course, getting the mental bit right is only part of the answer. There is a plethora of moving parts when it comes to trading. Learning how to pick good trades, understanding entry and exit signals, and spotting when a move is coming to an end are vitally important, too.

Australian Stingers stung by US at FINA World League Final gold medal match

July 21, 2017 · Filed under Uncategorized

In the gold medal match at water polo’s FINA World League Final tonight between the Australia Stingers and United States women’s national water polo team, Australia lost 4–6 to the USA in the last major competition before the 2012 Summer Olympics. The victory made for seven World League Super Final titles for Team USA.

At 7:00 p.m. Chinese local time, 9:00 p.m. Australian local time, the game got under way, with a Tweet from Australian Water Polo for fans at home who could not watch the game live. The Australians were down at quarter time, 1–2 with the team’s only goal coming from Bronwen Knox off a pass by Kate Gynther. By half time, Australia had battled back to take the lead 4–3, only to finish the third period tied 4–4 with the United States, and eventually lose 4–6.

In the lead up to the World League Final, the Australians spent time in Singapore before departing for China. While in Singapore, players had an opportunity to relax at the pool and several, including Knox, Rowena Webster, Nicola Zagame, and Melissa Rippon were very active on Twitter.

The team arrived in Shanghai and the Shanghai Institute of Sport a week before the start of the FINA Super League Finals. During their week-long preparation, they worked on strength and fitness training. When away from the pool, they did not have access to Twitter, Facebook, or television and had to entertain themselves using other means. Players finally explored the city six days after their arrival.

With limited opportunities for amusement in the hotel room during the competition, assistant coach Ryan Moar updated his Twitter account and played with a toy helicopter. Several of the players who were active on Twitter before departing for China stopped updating, including Webster, Rippon, and Zagame. Knox and Moran continued to provide updates on Twitter and Instagram throughout the competition.

Australian game days during the tournament included warming up poolside before the start of their games, and cooling down in the pool after them. Going into their match against the USA, they notched an 8–7 victory over China, an 18 to nil victory against Germany, and a 9–7 overtime shootout win against Russia.

On gold medal game day, Jane Moran updated her Twitter account to say “Final of World League Super Finals today v USA – goooo Stingers! ?#stingerspride”. About eight hours prior to game time, the team finished their final training session. Earlier in the afternoon, prior to game time in Australia, Channel 9 ran a feature on the team. Prior to the start of the game, the Australian Stingers official team Twitter account mocked Team USA for their team-branded k tape. During the pre-game warm up, team members did a variety of things including playing with their phones, warming up, and getting their arms taped. It was business as usual for the team that had beaten the United States the previous month at the VISA Water Polo International.

The bronze medal match between the China women’s national water polo team and Greece women’s national water polo team preceded the gold medal game, which Greece won 8–7, with quarter scoring of 1–2 in the first, 4–2 in the second, 1–2 in the third, and 1–2 in the fourth. In the other match, the Russia women’s national water polo team easily beat the Germany women’s national water polo team 18-4.

Japanese researchers create smell sensor using genetically engineered frog eggs

Japanese researchers create smell sensor using genetically engineered frog eggs

July 20, 2017 · Filed under Uncategorized

Sunday, August 29, 2010

A University of Tokyo group of researchers, led by bioengineer Shoji Takeuchi, has made an electronic sensor capable of smelling gases. The sensor uses genetically engineered frog cells. Since previous sensors were not very accurate, the scientist decided to try a biological approach. The invention was revealed in a US scientific journal yesterday, and is supposed to be used to design better machines to detect polluting gases in the atmosphere.

Previous smell sensors were based on quartz rods, which vibrate when a substance binds to them. The gases are distinguished by their molar masses, which can be similar for molecules with different structure, thus relatively often triggering a false positive. Trying to find a more accurate solution, Takeuchi decided to follow an example from insect world. As he explained, “when you think about the mosquito, it is able to find people because of carbon dioxide from the human. So the mosquito has CO2 receptors. When we can (extract) DNA (from the mosquito) we can put this DNA into the frog eggs to detect CO2.”

Genes of several insects (the silk moth, diamondback moth and fruit fly), injected into African clawed frog Xenopus laevis eggs, allowed them to produce relatively inexpensive and useful sensors. The choice of the species was caused by their widely studied and well-understood protein expression mechanism.

The modified cells responded to three kinds of pheromones and one odourant, which have similar chemical properties. When a molecule of an odorous substance adhered to the receptor on the membrane protein, ion channels opened for a certain period of time, and a current was generated. Its magnitude was clearly different for all four tested substances, allowing to distinguish between them accurately.

The colleagues embedded the sensor into a mannequin, so that it could shake its head when a gas was detected. It was easier to observe. Pheromones and molecules with quite similar molecule structure produced clearly distinguishable reaction, with higher accuracy than other biological or human-made sensors. As the research group said, the detection sensitivity of the odor sensor is several tens of parts per billion (ppb), and it is as high as the sensitivity of an existing odor sensor that uses an oxide semiconductor. The distinctive feature of the new sensor is its capability to selectively detect some odorous substances, rather than its sensitivity. Very few false positives were possible due to the biological mechanism involved.

At normal temperature, the sensor lifetime is about 12 hours, which can be extended by putting it into a refrigerator before first use.

Shoji Takeuchi says has a great hope for research use in future, since the frog eggs are very practical for genetic engineering, and can be conveniently used to develop smell sensors for a wide range of gases. He said, “The X. laevis oocyte has high versatility for the development of chemical sensors for various odorants. We believe that a shared ability to smell might open a new relationship between man and robot. .. The research will have wide implications… If the sensor is embedded in a nursing robot, it will be able to identify certain mouth odors or body odors. Also, it can be used for detecting CO2, air pollution, water pollution and food. It’s very important for the environment.”

At least twelve children have been injured after a swing ride at the Puyallup, Washington Spring Fair toppled over.

The ride is called a ‘LollySwing’, which is located in Kiddyland, where the riders sit in swings while the machine spins them around. It is owned by Funtastic Traveling Shows which has been a ride provider for the fair for over 50 years. The accident happened at around 6:30 p.m. (PDT).

Injuries are being described as mostly cuts and bruises, but one child was reported to have been in a neck brace and was taken to a local hospital. Five other children were also hospitalized.

According to one witness, “it just all of a sudden topped over.” The cause is under investigation. The ride has been at the fair for the past five years. Among the seven largest operators of fair rides in Washington, from 2001 to 2007 there were only seven reports of injuries related to mechanical failures.

Cranes are very commonly seen around. Largely, it is used in heavy industries. Every person would have noticed it is used in several day to day activities. Have you seen such items being used in building premises? Yes, generally, in construction projects, road building projects, they are usually found. Another area where it could be found is in fire service. Can you bring back to memory where else you would have found a crane. It is used in freight for loading and unloading purposes. These are some of the examples to determine where it can be found. Cranes are also used in heavy industries to carry heavy machinery for the purpose of assembling. Since they are used in heavy industries it is essential to buy quality products as low or poor quality stuffs can result in heavy danger. If quality items are purchased it can increase efficiency of work at any work place and thereby increase productivity.

Cranes are used for either lifting heavy objects or for lowering them. They are also used largely even to move heavy materials from one place to other. It simplifies the work of human as heavy loads can be carried easily from one place to the other with the help of them. However, the fact is clearly underlined that they are generally used in various aspects of our day to day life. There are different types of cranes that are found in the modern days. Each of them is designed to match requirement of the industry. Some of the cranes that are found in the market are the classified as overhead, Goliath and the semi Goliath, teeming, rotating hook and several others. They are tailored according to the industrial requirement. You can also come across the side lift, pick and carry crane, crawler, floating, railroad and many others. According to the features and according to the requirement a person can choose the specific type for his industry.

With changes in season new types are introduced into the market with latest developments and technical up gradation. The capacity of lifting objects is different from one another. The biggest advantage is that it eases the work of a person as heavy weights can be lifted easily and can be quickly transported from one place to that of the other. In olden days as there were lack of proper and advanced technology it can be seen that animals and human were used to transport thing from one place to the other. But in the modern era new and enhanced machinery has quickened the progress of work to a better extent. The best example is the construction industry where a person can envisage quick progress in the construction due to the use of some of the best industrial machines. Finally, it is essential to understand the working of the crane in a better manner and only specially trained person must operate it as they can be used as a simple machine to lift objects or can also be used in multiple ways also.

Manitoba’s flood creating hazardous conditions

Manitoba’s flood creating hazardous conditions

July 19, 2017 · Filed under Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

The Red River at Winnipeg is almost clear of ice blocks and ice jamming, however there are still dangers from the Red River flood.

Ice blocks which were as high as two storey buildings were ripping out trees, fences and railway ties. “You’ll see huge pans of ice standing vertical, up to 20 feet (6.1 m) high,” said Steve Topping, an official with the provincial Water Stewardship Department. “Ice was shoved up on the shore and took out trees with a very devastating effect. It has changed people’s view of the river.”

“It is incredible, the force. One piece of ice pushed out of the river about 20 feet. You watch the force push this up right in front of your eyes,” said Dean North, of the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police are ticketing sight seers who are driving through road closure signs and approaching excavators, cranes and crews breaking up the ice. Vehicles, people, boats, and kayaks are getting in the way.

An eight year old boy is in critical condition after slipping on a culvert Thursday. He was pulled underwater by the speed of the flowing water and remained under for about five to ten minutes until adults could rescue him. The air ambulance supplied by Alberta’s STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) remains in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“This is not a spectator sport. It’s not about getting the best pictures for the family albums. I know floods are seen as a bit of an event, but some of the instances I’m hearing about, people should give their head a shake, they really should,” said Steve Ashton Manitoba Emergency Measures Minister, “Those who fall into the river or get into trouble in another way would be not only endangering themselves but the emergency response crews trying to rescue them. I don’t want to see a situation … where we’re trying our darndest to prevent flooding and save lives and somebody [who] decides to go have a white-water experience ends up killing themselves.”

Early Easter Sunday morning floodwater reached the rural municipalities of St. Andrews and St. Clements north of Winnipeg. Residents were sent an evacuation advisory Good Friday, however some residents remained. Rescue efforts commenced Saturday night to find those stranded and unable to leave as their vehicles cannot travel in the swollen overland floodwaters. Some people were rescued from roof tops as entire houses were swept off of their foundations by the large ice blocks hurtling down the river.

Highways in the area remain closed. Neil Gobelle, of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation said to “definitely continue to watch the Red River Valley and north of the city up in the Selkirk area. Things are changing quite a bit, quite quickly, so we’ll keep an eye on those areas.”

As of Easter Sunday, Winnipeg is expected to be ice free on the Red River. The River rose 4 feet (1.2 m) in the course of 24 hours. Rain is in the forecast and the higher temperatures of 17 °C (62.6 °F) will cause melting of snow and ice.

A weather system caused by La Niña is being watched by the United States National Weather Service and its potential effects between April 16-18 for residents along the Red River Valley. “We want people to be aware there is a very real possibility of the river going higher than what is out there,” said Mark Ewens, data manager at the NWS, “To have spring floods like this back-to-back is just an unfortunate series of events that have come along to plague us this spring. We’re wanting people to understand that this is a potentially serious problem.”
